Left Handed Art

All Gerry's art until Jan 1st 2005 had been drawn and or painted with his right hand...on 1-1-05 he fell and broke his right shoulder.....OUCH ! Not letting a little thing like that slow him down he decided to paint left handed ...He started by sketching to train his left hand and was able to start painting in less than two weeks...The results were dramatic ...a bit more impressionistic..but...none the less were worthy of a mirrored signature...in memory of Leonardo's mirrored writing...

" APACHE CROWN DANCERS "

The Mountain Spirit "Gaan" taught the Apaches to perform various dances for different ceremonies. In July they perform the "Girls Sunrise Dance" to celebrate the coming of age of young Apache women..At other ceremonies the Crown Dancers perform for healing or blessings, traditionally at dusk or night...Typically there are five dancers total, one clown and four regular dancers...Variations do exist among the different Apache nations....11x14 ltd edition prints $125.00...the original 22x28 acrylic on canvas is available.

"LAST TATONKA"

Talk about departures..... Yes! Gerry painted this one too... in fact recently, in march of 06...Gerry's explanation for the work is simple ...Like a musician or singer who can't keep proforming the same piece over and over and over without going wacky..neither can a painter keep painting the same...you get the idea..

The painting's strong graphic quality and subject matter tell the same story as the Buffalo Nickel paintings; but, in a truly different way.. The original is perfectly square at 20 x 20 and is acrylic on canvas.. (limited edition prints are available)

" BUFFALO AND INDIAN HEAD NICKEL REFLECTIONS"

The purposeful slaughter of the"Tatonka"(bison /buffalo) by whites lead directly to the end of an era and a way of life that was unique to the original plains people...Gerry's portrayal of the nickel and what it was or wasn't supposed to honor is boldly brought to the viewers attention without any sugar coating..
